CHAPTER 15
Just Another Day in the Tuckinâ Weird Wild West
I succeeded in condensing the many wild and highly weird twists of the last twelve or so hours into the time it took me to sip a second glass of Deep Plunge. Simple enough to explain, far less so to live through. It took me longer to keep Rhett and Zeke from interrupting me than to tell the story of what had gone down in the night while Sharmayne slept off the booze.
Sliding my glass to the bar matron, I silently signaled for another. âI never meant to keep any of it from ya. You do know that, donât ya, Shar? I mean, I was tryinâ my damndest to tell you who I was at the end there, but you wouldnât let me finish what I set off to say.â
After setting my refill in front of me, she stared at me so hard and for so long that I miserably began cataloging the other establishments I could frequent if I wanted to kick back, have a delicious cool one, and enjoy the company of other Denners after a long, sweltering day: none. Wileyâs Cantina, with its barrels of straight hootch and not much else, hardly counted as a saloon, not when Wiley ran it out of a dusty shack behind his house.
âI swear, Shar, I didnât mean no harm. You know me. Weâre friends.â
She scowled, but finally nodded, a tight jerk of her head. Her chignon seemed more severe than usual, not a single strand of hair daring to slip out of place. âYep, youâre right, we are friends. And thatâs why youâre gonna keep every single thing ya heard when I thought you were Raze locked in ya to the grave. Else Iâm gonna need to find someone to wipe your memories clean.â She puckered her lips pensively and leaned back in her chair. âIâd bet Jony could handle somethinâ like that. She can be sharp as a whip when she wants to.â
âNope, no need. I promise. Iâm silent as a mouse fart.â I mimed locking my mouth with a key, then tossing it over my shoulder. âSee? All done.â
Sharmayne arched a dubious brow at me. âYa never been known for your restraintâ¦â
âYeah, but thatâs only âcause I ainât never needed to restrain myself afore.â Of course, that was a fat fib. Since Rhett and Zeke had burst through the portal, seemed like all Iâd done was keep myself from doing what I really wanted to do with them.
Still, I offered her a true smile. âCome on, Shar. Youâve known me since I was waddlinâ âround in diapers. Whenâve I ever done anythinâ to make you think I couldnât be trusted?â
âWell, ya used to sneak out of your pappyâs house all the time when ya still lived there.â
âYep. And Iâm pretty sure you woulda too.â
She stared at me for a long beat, then chuckled. âYa got me there. Coleâs a fine one, though I donât blame ya for tradinâ him out.
